Learn how to become a barber apprentice through mentorship, hands-on practice, and entrepreneurship training — built for youth and community members who want a career, not just a classroom.

A barber apprenticeship gives you real chair time, real clients, and real income while you learn. Unlike a standard trade school, you are not just memorizing state board theory — you are cutting hair, building a book of business, and learning how to run your own brand from day one.
Forgive My Grind Foundation's BYOB Initiative pairs aspiring barbers with experienced mentors who teach the craft, the customer service, and the business mindset needed to be your own boss.
Fill out the BYOB interest form. Tell us why you want to cut, your availability, and what success looks like for you.
Get matched with a barber mentor who fits your goals and schedule. Mentorship is the heart of the program.
Start with fundamentals — clippers, fades, tapering, line-ups, sanitation, and shop etiquette — then move to live practice.
Learn pricing, branding, social media, scheduling, and client retention so you can earn while you grow.
Prepare for your barber license or certification path, then launch with continued support from the FMG network.
BYOB is built around practical skills that turn a chair into a career. Every lesson is designed to make you confident behind the clippers and confident in business.
Our mentors are working barbers who have been in the chair for years. They teach the technical skills, but they also model professionalism, patience, communication, and how to handle the hard days.

No experience required. Bring your commitment, your hustle, and a willingness to learn. We'll handle the rest.

There is no cost for accepted applicants. The program is funded by community donations and powered by volunteer mentors who believe in the next generation.
Most apprentices train for 6–12 months depending on availability, commitment, and skill progression. There is no rigid timeline — we move at the pace of mastery.
Training takes place in partner barbershops and community spaces in the Fayetteville area. We are always looking for more shops to join the network.
Yes. While youth mentorship is our priority, BYOB welcomes community members of any age who are ready to learn and committed to the program.
